From Physical Structures to Digital Systems

I've spent most of my career rooted in the physical world of architecture. I design, detail, and help build real structures that people use every day.

My career began hands-on: construction work, followed by military service, then formal architectural training that culminated in becoming a licensed architect in California in 2013. In 1997, when I started as an intern architect, I caught the tail end of the hand-drafted era: ink on vellum, hand calculations, physical models. Almost overnight, the profession shifted to CAD, then BIM, parametric modeling, and computational design tools. That rapid evolution profoundly shaped how I think and work.

During my pre-licensure internship years, I divided my time between architectural and engineering offices while also working directly for contractors, contributing to both the design and construction of diverse projects. Alongside my core responsibilities, I taught architecture and engineering courses at various community colleges over five years. These experiences built a comprehensive foundation in the full architectural process and provided valuable cross-disciplinary insight.

Under licensed architects, I immersed myself in every phase of practice: pre-design programming, site analysis, client needs assessment; schematic design and conceptual development; design development, detailed construction documentation, building code compliance, material selection, project coordination, contract administration, construction management, and overall project leadership. This gave me deep mastery of essential architectural skills, including creative problem-solving, spatial planning, aesthetic and functional integration, regulatory navigation, and guiding multidisciplinary teams to bring projects from vision to reality.

Under licensed engineers, I performed substantive structural and civil engineering tasks under their responsible charge. The same work became incidental to the architectural scope when performed under architects. This dual exposure layered genuine competency in structural, civil, and related engineering disciplines onto my architectural foundation. It provided the education, training, and experience that allow me, as a California-licensed architect, to competently and legally handle incidental engineering (civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, etc.). Most architects engage specialist consultant engineers for every discipline; I bring in specialists only when necessary to meet project needs and the owner's goals. My background enables more seamless, integrated design services without the typical handoffs common in traditional architect-engineer relationships. All of this is grounded in full architectural excellence from initial concept through construction.

That same curiosity about tools extended beyond simply using software. I wanted to understand and build it. Over the past 25 years, I've progressively deepened my expertise in software design and development, learning to create the very applications and workflows that architects and engineers rely on. The pace accelerated dramatically around 2020, and especially in 2022, as I dove deeply into artificial intelligence and machine learning.

What ties it all together is the architectural mindset I honed on buildings: systematic problem-solving, ensuring structural and systemic integrity, prioritizing user experience, and finding elegant solutions to messy, complex challenges. Those same principles translate directly to software architecture and code. Today I practice both worlds. I bring rigorous design thinking to digital systems just as I do to physical ones.

BUILDING ARCHITECTURE & INTEGRATED DESIGN SERVICES

  • Licensed Architect in California (License No. C34484).
  • Full architectural services for commercial, residential, industrial, educational, healthcare, and mixed-use projects, from initial concept through construction completion.
  • Incidental engineering integration (structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, etc.) for more efficient coordination, reduced consultant handoffs, and streamlined project delivery.
  • Comprehensive pre-design and programming: client needs assessment, feasibility studies, site analysis, and master planning.
  • Schematic design and conceptual design development: creative ideation, spatial planning, and preliminary modeling.
  • Design development and detailed documentation: material selection, building systems coordination, and precise construction drawings.
  • Construction documents (drawings and specifications), incidental engineering, code compliance, and project permitting.
  • Construction administration, construction management, and project management: on-site observation, contractor coordination, submittal review, and issue resolution.
  • Sustainable design leadership as LEED AP BD+C: green strategies, energy modeling, material lifecycle analysis, and pursuit of certification.
  • BIM and digital workflows: Revit-based modeling, parametric design, and computational tools for accuracy and collaboration.
  • Site planning, landscape integration, and urban context considerations.
  • International projects delivered in compliance with owner's wants, needs, and goals, and in accordance with local professional practice laws, building regulations, and codes.
  • All services are provided responsibly within the scope of applicable jurisdictional regulations, with a focus on architectural excellence and integrated solutions that add value from concept to occupancy.

SOFTWARE ARCHITECTURE & DEVELOPMENT SERVICES

  • Custom software tools, applications, and workflows built to solve real problems, approached with the same careful, systematic thinking I use in architectural building design.
  • Software architecture planning: creating clear, organized structures for code that are easy to build on, maintain, and scale over time.
  • Full development process: starting with understanding the wants, needs, and goals of the client, then moving through prototyping and early versions, into building, testing, launching, and refining as needed.
  • AI and machine learning features: adding smart capabilities like predictions, automation, pattern recognition, or data insights to make tools more useful.
  • Specialized tools and scripts: developing practical helpers such as plugins, calculators, automation scripts, or custom apps that support daily work for architects, engineers, designers, or other teams.
  • Backend and frontend basics: building reliable connections (APIs), data handling, and user-friendly interfaces that work smoothly together.
  • Cloud setup and deployment: get software running online, keeping it reliable, and making updates straightforward.
  • Code review and improvements: looking at existing code to find ways to make it cleaner, faster, safer, or easier to work with.
  • Ongoing support: monitoring, fixing issues, and making small updates so the software stays useful long-term.
  • Bridging software and the physical world: developing extensions, simulation tools, analysis plugins, or other hybrid digital-physical solutions where they add meaningful value.
  • Projects handled worldwide, always following relevant data privacy rules, intellectual property guidelines, and good practices.
